The Winter Soldier, also known as Bucky Barnes, is a Marvel Comics character who originated as James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, the teenage sidekick of Captain America during World War II. Initially presumed dead after a mission gone wrong, Bucky was recovered by Soviet operatives and brainwashed into becoming a deadly assassin.
Subjected to experimental procedures that enhanced his physical abilities and granted him a cybernetic arm, Bucky was stripped of his memories and given the codename "Winter Soldier." For decades, he was cryogenically frozen between missions, becoming a ghost story whispered amongst intelligence circles.
As the Winter Soldier, Bucky carried out assassinations and sabotage for the Soviet Union and later Hydra, his actions cloaked in secrecy. He resurfaced in modern times, confronting Captain America, whose presence triggered the slow recovery of Bucky's fragmented memories.
Over time, Bucky battled against his programming and sought redemption for his past actions. With the help of Captain America and others, he began to piece together his identity and forge a new path, fighting alongside heroes to atone for the sins committed as the Winter Soldier.
